Cody native’s gestalt show opens Sept. 20 in Northwest GalleryPosted by: NWC News Desk — September 13, 2012
POWELL, Wyo. - “Gestalt: Sum of the Parts,” an exhibit of paintings by Cody native Rede Ballard, opens in Northwest Gallery in Powell Thursday, Sept. 20, with a 7:30 p.m. artist’s reception in the gallery.
The show features two recent bodies of work by Ballard, a Northwest College alum. One study is figurative; the other looks at landscape in nature. They’re connected by the artist’s ongoing study of gestalt theory and the notion that an organized whole is perceived as more than the sum of its parts.
Ballard, who currently teaches art at Campbell County High School in Gillette, said gestalt allows for him a broader sense of the importance of the artist in human existence.
“We are the keepers of dialogue,” Ballard said, in reference to artists, “our role as both mirror and interpreter make us the guardians of human experience. It is through gestalt theories and shared experience that I am able to look back retrospectively through the history of art and see why it is that I have felt connection to a particular number of works by others, and in turn borrowed aspects of their solutions in an attempt to express a similar human story.”
Ballard’s “Gestalt: Sum of the Parts” hangs in Northwest Gallery through Oct. 19. Located in the Cabre Building, the gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. Admission is free.
